Addition Reveal: Shire's Room

It might be a long time until our Addition Reveal series is done, but I am so stinkin glad we are on this end of the project! To have rooms we can start making our own now that the heavy construction is done is almost overwhelming. We are so proud of all the work that went in to this little house. We spent so many years imagining this, to one year ago actually producing drawings to follow, to now walking through the very hallways and rooms as we laid them on paper. This feels like a once in a lifetime experience and we are just in awe of how incredible everything has turned out!

While we still have work ahead of us, the first rooms of our newly imagined 3-5 year house 12 years later are coming to a finish. The kids’ rooms had the least impact of this reno so they’ve been closing in hot as they’ve been the easiest to work in amidst the rubble elsewhere.

Shire is a gal amongst the boys. She’s incredibly tough yet has such a gentle spirirt. Patient for days, she is a natural and gifted teacher who loves seeing others blossom. She prefers going against the grain of trends and doing her own thing, which makes her a magnet for all kinds of people. She loves easily, forgives quickly and is generous with her service to others.

Shire is different from me in ways that I thoroughly enjoy, (and am grateful for), but we share the same sense of humor. Laughing together can bridge many differences, and she and I can really get rolling with no turning back pretty often. It’s just the best!

So what does Shire’s personality have to do with this room? Absolutely everything! Shire is walking sunshine, but she is not flashy or desiring of attention. Her room strikes that unique balance as well. It’s happy without overwhelming - it draws you in closer and makes you want to stay, just like Shire has the ability to do. It’s a peaceful room with details on which you want to linger because they’re unique and interesting.

We are a family of very diverse personalities and I love when a homes spaces can reflect that. Our three kids rooms are as unique as each kid, and I love pulling out those characteristics that make them who they are and working those in through the elements used in each room! This is precisely what I love so much about design and why I’ve grown a business from it for the past 7 years.

Meet Foxy Boxy ||2016 Flip List Item No.7||

Good Friday to you and have a Happy Easter!  We are absorbing as much of this spring weather as our pores can handle over here.  Anyone else as desperate as me to get out of winter?!?!  Prayers have been answered people!  That is until Virginia weather changes it's mind again...

Ok, so when I scored the "Big Teak Whale" back in November, I also brought home his DUFF (designated ugly fat friend).  I've nicknamed her Boxy.

While sussing out some white and silver possibilities for a client, I rendered a couple mock-ups of flips:

So when the client decided they needed something bigger for their space, I took the opportunity to cross the first item off my 2016 Furniture Flip List: unconventional hardware!

Secretly, when I set my flippin' goals for 2016, I was already tinkering with the idea of house numbers as drawer pulls.  The trick was figuring out how to float mount them onto a drawer instead of the face of a house.  Luckily, the modern numbers I picked up from Home Depot had handy templates to use for easy drilling and could be retro fitted with a cabinet screw and a nut.

I would've started on this piece a lot earlier in the year but I just couldn't bring myself to pick a paint color!  You all know I usually lean towards the bright and bold, but my client requested renderings in a crisp modern white.  The more I worked on the concepts, the more I realized I loved this "tamer" look.  Plus I already had a can of our favorite durable/ glossy Glidden Door & Trim paint on hand, so I thought in the spirit of using what you have - go for it!

Something about letters or numbers makes me think nursery so I styled foxy Boxy a little sweeter with some salvaged blooms, sparse accessories, and an abstract watercolor piece in a simple white frame.

It's fun little water color & wax resist take on Monet's water lilies (who says you have to be in Kindergarten to play with crayons).

Also can any of you plant-friendly readers out there help me identify the blooms I used in my shoot?  The buds look like little pink droplets!

We are thinking of you all fondly this Easter and hope you find time amidst all that candy and plastic egg shells to reflect on the depth of God's sacrifice and be with your family.  

(But anyone else hoping a reese's egg will make it's way into their Easter basket?  No shame *licks lips*)

Shire's Room Makeover: The mission & the plan

I absolutely love playing with our home. It's a chance to try some different things and experiment. Playing around with arrangements, layout, colors, pattern, lighting, textures - it helps me learn in an environment where mistakes are accepted, and I can really get some experience under my belt.

But back to the mistakes. Our daughter, Shire's, room has probably been my greatest mistake yet. It's the smallest room in the house and when we moved her in here, I gave no thought to smart, functional space planning. I shifted things around on a whim, built her a bulky pallet bed platform, (leaving no under-bed storage), snagged a giant used wardrobe from Craigslist in mediocre condition, and called it good enough.

As the only girl under our roof, my heart went out to Shire. While she said she really liked her room, she never played in here. Not even once in a blue moon. Her dolls and doll clothes and puzzles were stashed messily in the wardrobe, (not pictured but just about 20" from the foot of her bed), and because the thing had become so disorganized she rarely opened it's doors, (which were hard to open anyhow because there was hardly any room left). After updating the boys' room when we bunked their beds, I saw how smart space planning really increased the use of their room for play time. Our three kids are all the same age so they naturally play with the same things and always together. It's hard to get alone time here; everyone's interested in the exact same things at the exact same times! This past summer it occurred to me that the kids bedrooms could be used for quiet, alone play time. And to get them that way they needed to be spatially planned better than they were.

So as soon as I was done with the boys' room, I turned my attention to Shire's. The mission was to spend nothing on her room makeover and this was the plan I designed on Olioboard:

The thing about a room makeover rather than a room design is that a makeover implies that you at least have existing stuff in a room. And the thing about having existing stuff is that you can either reuse it in a different way, or try to make a profit from it. And if you can make a profit from it, you've got yourself a little extra $ for your makeover! So up went the pallet bed and a few other things for sale, and with the money I invested in a few things I thought would really make this a special place for our girl.

Sahaj Jute Curtains from World Market, (which would actually just be traveling across the hall from our room to hers)

Paint an unused bookshelf in our basement white, move it to her room

Move this painting by my grandmother above the bed

My goal has been to shop our house for pieces that make better sense for this room and use the extra cash from selling pieces we don't need on items that will compliment the room better. Aside from creating a room that makes better sense functionally and feels special to our Shire, the hope is to have a completely madeover space without spending a dime!

I've got a little ways to go and have deviated from the Olioboard design above just a bit, but will be coming back next week to reveal the full room makeover in it's entirety! Stay tuned, friends!
