Reader Design: Meredith's Simplified Space

It seems like the whole country is experiencing some crazy sunshine this week! But no place gets more sunshine than the location of today's reader design location: Denver, Colorado. Allegedly, this city gets a whopping 300 days of sunshine, and you can tell by the lightness and brightness of Meredith's home.

When we bought this home, it was filled to the brim with bold paint colors, glossy finishes, and bright accent walls. My first goal was to lighten everything up and make the rooms feel more cohesive. We used the same light gray paint color (Silver Drop by Behr) in almost every room, and it’s done wonders for making our home feel light and bright and so much bigger! From there I tried to arrange furniture and decorate so our home feels welcoming and cozy but still simplified and clean.

My style and DIY skills have definitely evolved over the past 10 years of home-ownership. Our first house was an 80s ranch in Arkansas, where we learned to scrape popcorn ceilings, add recessed lighting, and paint lots and lots of wood trim. I started collecting mid-century modern furniture pieces there because they fit the style of the house, but over time, mid-century furnishings became part of our style, too. Now those same pieces seem to fit our very non-ranch second home in Colorado because they are a reflection of us.

Our family room is full of more favorite pieces. The credenza was a $40 Craigslist find that I spent hours sanding down to bare wood and refinishing. That thing will probably outlive me! The gold arc lamp was an estate sale find that took three adults to load into my car (with two carseats installed). And of course, our West Elm leather sofa is the most durable, comfortable thing ever. It was our only brand-new furniture purchase after moving to Colorado and it was worth every penny.

One design element I will always be willing to splurge on is good lighting. In both of our homes, we replaced horrible wood-framed fluorescent lighting in the kitchens with recessed lights. We’ve also updated almost every single light fixture throughout our home. I don’t necessarily need something high-end if it’s a good design. I tend to prefer simple globe pendants and sconces, except for in our girls’ shared bedroom where I added the most girly floral chandelier ever!

Over the past year, my husband and I have strived to simplify the way we live. We’ve emptied out our unfinished basement, decluttered our kids’ toy collection and our closets, reduced the number of decor items out at any given time, and even put half our dishes and flatware into storage so our kitchen stays cleaner. Our home feels lighter and bigger and we spend much less time cleaning and tidying! I’d love to be a true minimalist, but I have to balance a love of adding interesting textures and pops of color, too. Lately I’ve learned that keeping the pieces you feel most passionate about and letting go of the rest is a pretty great recipe for a home you love.

Reader Design: Katie's Midwestern Oasis

Now before you say it, I know what you're thinking. "Midwestern" and "oasis" are two words that don't typically go together. Those fly-over states aren't always known for their restorative or relaxing natures, but after a visit to Katie's Cincinnati, Ohio home, that reputation may be forever changed.

Now, perhaps this is because Katie isn't exactly drawing inspiration from her surrounding geography:

That’s why I pull from many different geographic locations for my design inspiration and aesthetic. I love the light and airy boho vibes of the beaches of Southern California, but I love to reign it back in with the warmth and coziness of a mountain craftsman out West to achieve a light, but lived-in design style.

The result is a space that's mid-century bohemian - those lines we love from the 50s & 60s tempered by the whimsy and light-heartedness of boho elements.

When styling my space, my goal is for it to feel curated, relaxed, and homey. Nothing too stuffy or fancy.

My favorite article in my entire home is my large antique Persian rug that lives in my living room. It is my most prized possession, aside from my children, of course! Vintage rugs, in my opinion, are worth splurging on because each one as so much history and they’re all one of a kind.

I couldn’t live without plants surrounding me at all times in my home. I love incorporating them into every room, not only because of how visually stunning they are, but also because of their purifying and restorative properties. They have the ability to ground a space, no matter how big or small. Having plants around helps me create a calm a relaxing oasis, in a way that is unable to be achieved by anything else.

I hope you all enjoys a week of love next week; we'll see you back here!

Reader Design: Courtney's Sentimental Spot

You're probably wondering why I'm calling today's stunning Tulsa, Oklahoma feature 'sentimental.' After all, we probably all have some sentimental attachment to our homes. How could we not, after pouring bits of ourselves - our time, our money, our souls - into them.

But today's home is seriously sentimental. It's literally the place where Courtney met her husband Jordan.

That's right. They met here. In this room, in fact - the living room.

From Courtney:

My husband, Jordan, renovated our home with his sister and brother-in-law before we met. They bought the home at an auction on the front porch and uncovered the original hardwoods, gutted the kitchen, replaced all the windows, and added central air. He had two roommates at the time, and I had a mutual friend with one of Jordan’s roommates. We were hanging out in the living room one day and Jordan came home. We briefly met and a few weeks later he asked me on a date! Less than a year later, we were married and I moved into the original place we met.

An incredible story, right? Not to get too sappy, but I think it's clear that this place has been built with and around love since the beginning, with it's original woodwork, comfy and cozy layout, and carefully selected decor.

Courtney describes her home as "a little beachy, a little modern, a little Southern, and nothing too perfect" - it's just an accurate representation of life, a place that makes you feel calm without false pretense or expectations.

I’ve always had the desire to cultivate a peaceful home, a place where there is a sense of rest and a place where others are invited to come in, unload their burdens and enjoy a place of peace. It’s more than creating a pretty space; I enjoy creating a space for others to feel comfortable in.

The 1930's bungalow has plenty of idiosyncrasies, and despite her inclination for all things modern, Courtney tries to stay true to the roots of the home. She selected simple, period-appropriate dining chairs, paired with vintage rugs throughout the living space. A comfy couch accented with real cotton textiles.

Courtney is continuing to let their home guide her as it will.

I spend a lot of time at home, so I am always tweaking something! Nothing is perfect if you look closely and I have so many unfinished projects that are on my “to-do” list. Most everything has a DIY touch to it because you learn to get creative when you’re newlyweds. Our home is always evolving, and we have so many projects we are saving up for, but we still love where it is now.

And here's some sage advice to close us out:

The best advice I’ve been given is to enjoy your home before it is where you want it to be. This advice has taught me that creating a peaceful home is more than a space that reflects your style and Pinterest board, it is opening your home for others and focusing on the relationships that are built there. The style will come with time.

Courtney, thank you for letting us in for a tour today! You have a stunning home, and we can't wait to see where it takes you. Follow Courtney along on Instagram @alwaysrooney to share in the journey.

Till next time,
