My Bold Hues ||Week 2||

Man alive!  It has been a real treat to peruse the #MyBoldHues feed on Instagram and drink in all the color-filled DIY and décor goodness.  My co-hosts  Blue I Style, Copper Dot Interiors, Domicile37, Mila Jest Cafe, PMQ for Two, Semigloss Design, and I started this hashtag to celebrate our common love of ALL. THE. COLORS.  Each month, it is our privilege to share some of our favorite on our blogs and this month's roundup is a doozy.

Pati @patirobins has made me fall in love with black walls.  Seriously.  I've never realized just how much colors can POP against the dark void of color.  All of the photos on her feed are moody and fun and totally worth a follow.

Fun fact.  I love CHARTREUSE.  And Nikki's @collectedhome green walls are singin' my SONG ya'll!  It's split-pea nature is the perfect nod to her retro "mod pod" as she calls it and the perfect background to the graphic artwork.

Maggie's @maggieoverbystudios eye for style has always blown me away.  And this mantle is no exception.  I can't decide what I like most about this mantle: the art, the paint job, or THOSE CANDLESTICKS.  Ok.  It might be the candlesticks...

And I can't help but end on Mary's @thisthriftedabode styled peg rack.  A soft color pallet can still be bold people!  And these muted colors against the white wall read so calming with a generous helping of cheery.

Reader Design: Kristin's Cali Cool Home

I don't know about you, but I am SO ready for Spring. I know I'm a couple weeks past Groundhog Day, but boy do I wish the outcome had been different. I need to trade in my huge parka for a light jacket, my boots for some sandals, and I long for the day when I don't need to add bronzer to look healthy. All I can say is thank goodness I now see the light when I leave my good ole day job. 

That light and hint of summer are two of the reasons for my envy of Kristin's Venice Beach, CA home. 

Kristin's family home is mid-century, bohemian, bright, and kid-friendly. It's everything that is right with California style! And that style is the result of some pretty great influences.

One of those? Kristin's mom and her partner.  

“They travel to craft fairs and galleries and very carefully hand pick art and pottery. They both have an excellent eye and have taught me the importance of collecting special pieces (furniture, too) over time.”

Another? The physical surroundings in which she's chosen to raise her family. 

“Venice has gorgeous diverse architecture. It is so inspiring! I love the modern beachy bohemian design trending here and it has definitely influenced my style.”
 
 

It still takes a heckuva internal compass to get the blending of all those influences right. And for Kristin, that compass is her family. Above all, her space feels like it's made for a family. For movie nights, games, making a mess - all without, as Kristin says, "freaking out."

And with a family, everything has to be built to last.

“I love picking furniture that is simple, modern and classic made to last for a very long time. The grey couch in our family room, for example, is a couch I’ve had for 15 years! And then, as trends come and go, I can keep up with them with accessories. Accessories can be sourced for so much cheaper! For example, my bohemian basket wall in my dining room cost $30 total because I found the baskets at antique and thrift stores. ”

Some of those trends that Kristin just nails are her bright white kitchen (Kristin would like to thank her friend Hannah, @repeatworld, for her valuable input), which is the perfect clean and beautiful family gathering place; the indigo and mudcloth pillows, lovingly placed both for their cuddling abilities and for impromptu photo ops; and the graffiti art that pays homage to none other than Venice Beach itself.

DIY Planter ||Furniture Flip Bucket List||

Ok so something magical happened.  I made something I've always wanted to make using only the items I already had lying around.  That's a project with like no risk and all reward.  Hey-Oh!  Even better, this project also fulfills one of the items on my 2017 Furniture Flip Bucket List.  Double Hey-Oh!

So which item is the first I shall be crossing off this year's list?

 
 

Why No.3 of course.

The construction of this little guy was relatively simple.  All I needed was some round wooden dowels, a dowel kit, some wood glue, and a large ceramic planter.  Following along with this handy tutorial, I was able to assemble the four legs and the joining cross section. 

I built the stand to fit a ceramic planter I had lying around (with a dead plant carcass inside).  For extra stability, I secured the joints with wood glue and strapped the base in place to set.

Once the glue dried, I spray-painted the planter white and stained the legs a warm brown to get that iconic MCM planter look.

Now my plant children have a place of honor to reside.

Despite the glue, he's still not the sturdiest but I am proud I built him nonetheless.  And I still plan to improve my carpentry skills and build something SUPER solid to fulfill item No.7 this year.
