Reader Design: Annie's Farmhouse Charm House

Ok so we already love Friday, but Annie's Reader Design is the cherry on top!  Annie from Zevy Joy is a wonderful new Insta-friend (you can follow her @zevyjoy for some insta-inspiration).  And I'm so excited she shared her #stylemuttspaces with us so we could share them with you!  And the best part about this reader design is it's practically a whole home tour!  Let's get gawking shall we?

From Annie:

Here is our kitchen with an eat-in Island...  I would say my style is mostly farmhouse/country - a bit industrial. We completely renovated this sweet little kitchen by taking down a small wall and putting in an island I found on Craigslist and adding a butcher block counter top. We painted the cabinets and I recently painted our heirloom China hutch. As a finishing touch we added copper chicken wire in place of the glass doors. I spray painted our light fixture so it would look like copper pendants and this space is perfect for us.
Bessie the cow joined our kitchen a couple years ago and so did the open shelves from Ikea.

Who wouldn't want a sweet and laurel-ed Bessie watching over their coffee station?

Annie's open concept floor plan allows sight lines to move seamlessly to the dining and living areas.  I love the mix of wood and metal for such a refined farmhouse vibe.

[The dining room/ living room] is an open concept room that you enter from our kitchen. It was originally built as a sun room but we use it for these purposes instead. Some of our of furniture was handed down from my grandparents and parents. We found our dining table on Craigslist.  As I have developed my style I am drawn to neutrals and wood tones - a mix of farmhouse and country. Most of the time I am trying to use what we have considering we are on a very tight budget. Our sectional was a rich chocolate brown and very comfy. Instead of replacing it I ended up sewing the slipcover for it with 100% duck cotton. I still have many things I would love to do to this space but have had so much fun making it our home!

You sewed an entire sectional slipcover?!?!  Mad props girl.

If you think that couch looks comfy you should see the bedroom!  Thankfully the tour doesn't end here and we get to sneak a peek here too:

It is small but I have been working on making it a space that is comfortable for us. It has been the last room to really get any attention so I have enjoyed styling it to fit our taste. This room has the most color in my very neutral decor themed home. Again I love white linens and this room has touches of blue. Mirrors to reflect light and lots of texture with blanket layers. Many heirloom pieces in this room from my great grandparents - I love having these and they are very special to me!

Thank you Annie for inviting us into your home!  I love the textured pile of cozy white linens and the desk as a nightstand!  What was your favorite part of the tour ya'll?

Sleek, glam desk || Before+After

Hi friends! Quick rhetorical question for ya: Would you bring this desk home with you from a thrift store?

It certainly wasn't much to look at when I saw it a month or so ago. In fact, I passed it by twice before removing all the junk stacked on top to take a closer look. And let me tell you, the closer look did NOT help! Peeling contact paper on the drawer fronts, unattached corners of veneer, and what appeared to be a coded treasure map etched into the top surface. So, I took all of this and weighed it against the one pro - the shape! I thought, if I can do something, anything to help this desk, it could be da bomb diggity!

So I painted it glossy white and sprayed the handles gold. Done and done.

It's not every day that a simple coat of white paint impresses me this much, but if there were ever a piece to paint white and be DONE with it, this was the piece! I used Glidden's Trim, Door, Furniture paint in Bright White. I've shared this paint before with this custom three-piece set, but let's just say it again: If you want a high gloss finish that's as easy to achieve as the no-prep chalk paint, THIS is your paint. It's thick as molasses, and adheres to anything. I didn't do any prep on this piece other than cleaning it up a bit, (and I did use strong wood glue to reattach the veneer and peeled off the loose contact paper). But with a paint this thick, it's going to hold everything together anyways.

When dry, the surface settles to a smooth, glassy finish that is reflective and durable as anything I've seen. I've banged pieces covered in this paint and not a single thing happens. The paint won't chip, peel, or get a single ding.

This piece is now available for sale to the DC metro area

Reader Design: Iris' Peaceful, Coastal Home

Boy, what a week! When the blog is quiet it means one of two things - we are either on vacation or busy being! In Cate's and my case on this particular week, it's been the latter. And what better a way to treat ourselves and all you hustlers out there than with a gorgeous Reader Design by a beautiful friend! I mean, do we know how to celebrate Friday or what?!

We've mentioned Iris before - the kindred spirit who nominated us for the Liebster Award after receiving it herself over at Around the Watts House. It's been a privilege getting to know this sweet soul through Instagram and to call her a friend, (you can follow her @irisnacole). At left is just a peek of the goodness on her Instagram feed. So refreshing!

As soon as she revealed her newly finished entryway and living room, we just couldn't wait to share her from-scratch job here!

Entryway

From Iris:

"The new year has brought with it my confidence in knowing what I want out of a home.  I have come to the realization that I don't have to stick to one style, which is something that I love about StyleMutt.  They show that as long as you are creating for yourself, you can't go wrong.  My tastes vary, but at the heart of it all I have found that coastal décor brings me so much peace."

"I tried to pull in as many natural elements into the space as possible.  The agate print on the wall has such calming colors which is what initially attracted me to it.  It pulls double duty, because it also reminds me of the ocean.  A few more touches of coastal décor, such as using a glass hurricane to hold coastal vase filler, and placing a starfish figurine in the glass box finished up the space for me. "

After an entrance like that, aren't you just dying to see the rest of her home?! Let's roll!!

Living Room

"Completing my family room has been something I've been looking forward to for about a year now.  Back when I first started building my entertainment center, I couldn't have ever known that it would end up like this.  I really hadn't "found my style" yet, and I'm sure that if I had completed it back then it would have ended up being something I would have wanted to redo soon after.  Luckily life happens, and other projects took priority, so I had time to learn about décor, and really get in touch with my own style. "

"Once I took the time to do that, I came to the conclusion that coastal décor really speaks to my heart and makes me feel comfortable and relaxed.

Because this room is on the second floor, and really only seen by family, I wanted to go all out with this theme.  My biggest goal was to make the space comfortable for the three of us, but to also accommodate other family and friends that may come to visit.  This meant making sure I had plenty of seating.  The couch we found is a three seater and fairly deep, because who wants to sit straight up watching tv?  Not this slouch!  I found a great striped chair to add to the mix.  It's not only pretty, but very comfortable to sit in."

As you might know, kids come with a million toys.  I just can't seem to keep them contained to his play room, so I can easily scoop them up and store them away if I need to.  We have ample storage in the media unit, as well as the bookshelf in the back of the room, and I brought in a bench that I placed behind the couch, and a small stool that I added to the main area.  Both of them open up to store things too, so that was a plus."

"Luckily for a home décor enthusiast like myself I had a lot of shelves to decorate.  I brought in previously owned coastal items, and when I found that I needed more, I hit up Home Goods, TJ Maxx, and Marshall's for the rest.  Each store is packed with items like this right now, so it wasn't a huge burden to go and look for stuff."

Duly noted!!!

"We've had the room put together for a few weeks now, and we love it.  Rordan rides his little car though the open spaces, as John and I watch movies, and it really brings a new level of excitement for family time."

Isn't this the best tour to share on the first day of Spring?! It's got me counting down the days to our beach trip. :) Iris, thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home and hard work here! What a treat!
