Masculine Two-Tone Dresser

I know - shop inventory has been light.  But that's actually good news for StyleMutt Home.  It means that we've been busy working on some of our eDesign projects like this one and this one.  This new branch of our business is growing rapidly which means our furniture flips have become less frequent.  But luckily spring cleaning + yard sales go hand-in-hand this time of year and I found a new (free!) project I just couldn't pass up!

When I first saw him, I actually liked the black and gold he was rockin'.  Yeah he was a little beat up.  And was reading a little 80's to me.  But look at those lines!  I decided to keep with his darker hues but modernize him a little.

I chose to refinish it in a color called Black Boudoir by Behr. It's a dark color that dances between gray, black, and blue - which I think makes him a bit more mysterious.

The dark color allows the unusual brass handles to pop.

But instead of painting the whole piece, I stripped the paint off the sides to reveal the beautiful wood grain.

Our MO is usually to do a white + wood combo.  But this time I wanted to take a different spin on it by doing the dark + wood.

The dresser's maker's mark says this piece is a local!  From Waynesboro, VA to be exact.

I kept the styling more masculine in color pallet but still playful with the amazing hanging planters from Apollo Box.

They come in three delicate shapes (tear drop, diamond, and chemistry flask) and look pretty with living or dried greens in them.

Salvaged Wood + Iron Console

Hi, friends! Few things add as much pressure as taking on a custom order piece for friends or family. I've done quite a few special custom orders for those near and dear over the years and in the back of my mind I'm always thinking, "This is it. They're going to find out I'm a lying phony who's all talk and can't produce."

I know my loved ones aren't shallow people, but still.  It's very humbling when friends/family invite me to tackle a piece for them and if it doesn't turn out to be everything they hoped and dreamed it can get, well, awkward. And nobody likes awkward. So I will do whatever it takes to avoid awkwardness and ensure hopes and dreams are fulfilled and that I can still go over to their homes and walk past pieces that have come from my garage and not have to look the other way and pretend it's not there. You follow?

Our dear friends Morgan and Zach recently asked if I could make them a console table for their entry as a spot to toss keys, books, etc when they walk through the door. They're young and cool and like rustic decor with a dash of industrial and bit of clean lined modern. I was so excited to take on this piece for them and after finding the right pieces, this is what I came up with:

This piece was very easy to make once I had the right materials. You could make it, too! Here's what you'll need:
-1 x long piece of salvaged wood*, (mine was about 7-8 feet by 9" deep which I found at Community Forklift in Hyattsville, MD)
-1 x 4-5ft by 8" clean, solid wood board, (I used a scrap piece of poplar that was about a half inch thick)
-4 x 1.5 inch flat bar hairpin legs, (found here on eBay)

First thing I did was measured and marked every 12" on the long salvaged board and then Matt helped me make the cuts. With such a long, heavy piece, it was nice to have two pairs of hands, one to sturdy the piece while the other made the cuts. Safety, and all that. :)

Second, I lined the pieces up side by side on the floor so they were all even, then slapped some wood glue on and placed the clean piece of poplar on top. Then we screwed the clean board into each cut piece of salvaged wood.

Finally, with the table top done and upside down, I screwed the legs into each corner.

I love the texture and visual interest of taking a salvaged piece and chopping it up to make a slatted table!

The salvaged wood already had loads of character - beautiful grain, gnarly knots, splatters of faded paint from a previous life.

And one of natures' perfect art forms; the rings of the wood.

Petite Parquet Cabinet Converted

Hi friends! Back in today with another flip of a recently thrifted find! No yarn involved today. ;) When I saw this parquet and bamboo cabinet I was so excited to get my hands on it; the piece was in amazing condition, just needed a little TLC!

It looked a little sad sitting so low on the floor like that! So I took a cue from the beautiful parquet surface of this piece and ordered a set of hairpin legs. What I adore so much about hairpin legs is the balance between masculine and feminine - they're strong, sturdy, wrought iron legs but the lines look so graceful!

The one factor that hung me up on this flip for a solid week was what height to order the legs. Ultimately I came to two options; use the piece for its top surface and keep it at buffet height, or lift it even higher for easy access to it's cool interior storage. Since all signs pointed to this piece being a vintage piece, (albeit in fantastic shape), I wasn't sure how truly functional the top surface would be since the parquet creates a not totally smooth surface and I don't know how easy it is to clean. I concluded this piece would be best used as a storage piece so I found legs that would give it the height to make those cabinet pulls convenient to open without bending over. Once the piece was finished I immediately pictured it as a small space liquer cabinet/bar. The height and size would be perfect in a small dining room where square footage is precious, and you could even stash a stool or storage basket underneath!

I love the bamboo trim! Such a beautiful detail that just adds something special to this already unique piece.
